Dr Suranga Seneviratne

Senior Lecturer in Security

Dr. Suranga Seneviratne is a Senior Lecturer in Security at the School of Computer Science, The University of Sydney. His research interests include Security and Privacy and AI Applications in Security and Privacy. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia 2015.  He received his BSc (Hons) degree and Post Graduate Diploma in Telecommunications from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, in 2005 and 2010.  Currently, he is leading multiple projects funded by ARC, Defence, and other industry partners on various topics in cybersecurity.

Dr Charika Alvis

Research Fellow

Charika received her PhD in machine learning from the School of Computer Science at The University of Sydney, Australia in September 2017. From 2017 to 2020 Charika was a postdoctoral research associate with the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Group at the Australian Centre for Field Robotics of the University of Sydney. In 2022 Charika was awarded the Office of National Intelligence/National Intelligence Postdoctoral Grant and currently is a research fellow with the ONI and The University of Sydney.

Dr Anirban Mahanti

Honorary Senior Research Fellow

Anirban Mahanti’s technical expertise is at the intersection of computer networking, data science, and machine learning. Anirban earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, in 2003, his MSc in Computer Science in 1999, and his BE in Computer Science and Engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology, India, in 1993. He is currently an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sydney.

Naveen Karunanayake

Naveen Karunanayake is a doctoral student at the University of Sydney, specializing in the security and privacy of machine learning. His current research focuses on developing robust and privacy-preserving machine learning techniques, with a particular emphasis on deep learning models. Naveen’s work aims to address the vulnerabilities and threats faced by machine learning systems, especially in the context of adversarial attacks and privacy breaches.

Ravin Gunawardena

PhD Student

Ravin Gunawardena is a doctoral student at the University of New South Wales, specializing in the security of machine learning models. His research focuses on the intersection of cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, generating perturbations for time series data while adhering to domain constraints. Ravin’s work aims to fortify the security of machine learning models by developing novel approaches for crafting sparse perturbations in time series data and defences against such attacks.

Fariza Rashid

Fariza Rashid

PhD Student

Fariza is a doctoral student at the University of Sydney, conducting research on applications of AI in cyber threat intelligence in collaboration with Thales Australia. She completed a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Hons) in Data Science and Financial Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Sydney in 2021. Her current work involves using deep learning, specifically sequential classification techniques, to identify benign indicators in malicious URL detection with a focus on reducing false positive rates.

Dishanika Denipitiyage

Dishanika Denipitiyage is a doctoral student at the University of Sydney, specializing in multi-modal self-supervised learning to perform content compliance checks on mobile applications.

Bhanuka Silva

PhD Student

Bhanuka Silva is a doctoral student at the University of Sydney and his current research focuses on conducting privacy compliance checks in mobile app eco-systems by leveraging state-of-the art natural language processing techniques.

A graduate from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka with a B.Sc. Honours in Computer Science, with almost 2 years of experience working as a Machine Learning Engineer at Neurotechnology Lab, Sri Lanka. Currently pursuing a PhD at UNSW, Sydney focusing on building mobile app security solutions using AI.  Research Interests: Deep Learning, AI, Mobile Security

Yasod Ginige

PhD Student

 Yasod Ginige is a doctoral student at the University of Sydney, specializing in empowering cybersecurity tools with AI. His current research focuses on developing advance red teaming and blue teaming techniques by enhancing current tools and methods using LLMs and other deep learning approaches. Yasod’s work aims to develop sustainable solutions to mitigate cyber threats faced by the small and medium enterprises in Australia.
